Any citizen who held usage rights was then entered into the register of citizens and entitled to the management of lots of five to seven Are of the Plauelrain every time a vineyard parcel became vacant. The vineyard was created between 1860 and 1864 under mayor Nepomuk Reichert. Apart from the right to the vineyard parcel, the citizen also had a right to a plot of farmland on the Allmend (now a residential area). Widows were able to keep these usage rights of the citizenry upon the death of their husbands; it represented a property-type right. Most of the time, the sons took over the vineyard parcel, which meant that some of the plots were managed by one family over several generations. Even today there are still about 40 elderly citizens in Durbach who hold these usage rights. In Ebersweier, usage rights of the citizenry were (are) also associated with the right to four steres of firewood \u2013 the stere is a unit of volume equal to one cubic metre, typically used for measuring large quantities of firewood.
