218 Margrave Carl Friedrich of Baden

The picture here shows Margrave  Carl Friedrich of Baden, the founder of the “Klingelberger”.

He was the one who abolished serfdom in the county of Baden and became crucial to Durbach when he started to grow monoculture Riesling vines on his winery Schloss Staufenberg in 1782, around the Klingelberg. The seedlings came from the Rheingau area. It was here in Ortenau that Riesling began its dissemination, which is since then referred to as Klingelberger.
