700 Special Exhibition “The Legends from Durbach Valley”

For many centuries, Staufenberg Castle and the landscape of the Durbach Valley—with its sunny vineyard slopes and the deep forests of the narrowing valley stretching down to the Moos and up to the Mooskopf—have provided inspiration for stories and poetry.

In the old days of pine-wood splinters and candlelight, stories were usually passed down orally from generation to generation and varied from valley to valley.

With the epic poem about Knight Peter and Melusine of Staufenberg Castle, written around 1310, our exhibition features what is likely the oldest medieval written record of this tale. The story evolved and was rewritten in 1478 and 1588 in the versions current at the time. These originals are also on display in the exhibition, and visitors can leaf through facsimiles of them.

The Moospfaff has been up to his old tricks around the dark Moos for centuries and can be admired in the exhibition. This and 40 other legends and tales from the Durbach valleys and the surrounding area can be conveniently listened to at an audio station.
