410 Carriage barn

The old wooden carts with iron tyres have been given a place of honour in the Museum of Wine and Local History. Only a few cartwrights still have the skills to restore these old tools or to replace parts even. Our museum made an enormous effort to restore these wagons in recent years, …

so that they can be returned to the streets for historic parades or other occasions in the future, to the delight of the general public.

Harvesting waggon with two grape containers – it usually required a strong team of oxen or horses to pull this heavy waggon through the, often steep, vineyards. Most of the grapes had to be carried over steep vineyard steps and footpaths to reach the location of the cart .

Barrel cart – after the wine harvest, the innkeepers would visit the winemaker with such barrels to pick up the wine. Such transports went all the way to Swabia. The barrel was adorned with a Maien (small decorated fir tree).

Hay waggon – his waggon was used for harvesting hay and fruits and loaded high. The harvest was fastened with a  Wiesbaum, a rod.

Timber trailer Apart from the viticulture and the many fruits, Durbach still has approx. 1,200 hectares of forest.   The timber traileris modifiable , i.e., it it can be extended as needed according to the length of the logs.

ladder made from cherry wood with 40 rungs – until the early 1960s, the only means to pick the cherries in the tall trees using a basket or bucket. This approach was replaced by the shakers, which were attached to the tractor and used to shake individual large branches over spread-out towels. Today, tree shakers are being employed, which collect the cherries within a few seconds with the aid of tarp. Some machines are equipped with conveyor belts that transport and clean the cherries at the same time.
